Nokia Play To lets you show photos and videos taken with your mobile to your friends wirelessly on your TV. Or you can listen to your favourite music stored on your mobile with your home audio system. Just launch Play To, select the device and media you want to play. No configuration is needed once WLAN is on and all devices are connected to the same network.

Nokia Play To is meant for playing media stored on mobile i.e. it is not possible to access other DLNA devices with it. We wanted to concentrate on creating a solution for easily enjoying mobile media on a big TV screen or with an audio system. If you are familiar with DLNA technology we are supporting push and server functionalities with our current implementation.



New in this release (29-Jun-11):

● Server support for Xbox
● Video progress bar buffering indication 
● Improved WLAN transmission throughput (may help making video streaming smooth)
● LG Blu-ray player support fixed
● Many minor fixes / improvements

What you need:

A network with WLAN access is needed as well as a DLNA capable playing device (e.g. TV, A/V amplifier, Blu-ray player or PS3 game console). All devices including mobile must be connected to the same network.

Compatibility:

Supported phone models: Nokia C6-01, Nokia C7, Nokia E7, Nokia N8 and Nokia X7.

Setup when using the Play To application:

● If you have your home WLAN configured all you need to do is start the application - it automatically launches WLAN and connects to your WLAN
● If you have several available WLAN access points configured check before opening Play To that you are connected to the right WLAN
● The dlna device you use for playing the media needs to be connected to the same network. It can be connected either by LAN cable or wirelessly if it has its own WLAN access.

Setup when browsing media from the phone with a dlna player (e.g. Play Station 3):

● Go to Setting...Connectivity... Check that you are connected to right WLAN network. If not, do that from the WLAN settings. When connected continue to Media server... Share content and set it to "On". Now the phones media server is visible in the current WLAN
● You do not need to start the Play To application
● Use your player device's user interface to browse the photos/videos/music in your phone. Refer to the player's user manual for more detailed instructions
● When you want that your media content is no longer visible just set the Media server... Share content... to "Off". The server is also automatically shut down when WLAN is changed, lost or turned off.

Hints:

● There's a "Now playing" shortcut in the toolbar for quick access to last played media item.
● Tap the sharing indicator any time to stop sharing any media.
● Playing DRM content is not possible with Nokia Play To
● The application displays only self captured videos by default. There's an option in connectivity settings Setting...Connectivity...Media server... Video support to have all your video content available in Play To. You need to restart the application before the change takes effect. NOTE!: it depends on your player device which video formats it can play.
● Windows 7 users: in Windows Media Player activate from menu Stream -> Allow remote control of my Player and Allow remote control on this network (make sure you choose "Home network" as the network type because "Work network" may prevent some messages to go through!)

Known issues:

● Play Station 3 - there's an issue with music and videos; they may stop playback after a while (will be fixed in next release)
● Xbox - there's an issue when there's >>500 media type items (will be fixed in next release)
● The user interface look and feel is not finalized
● Video format (Video capture in 720p 25 fps with codecs H.264, MPEG-4) used in Nokia S^3 products' self-captured videos is not supported in all DLNA TVs 
● There is some delay depending on the video's size and the player device (up to minutes with large videos)
● Sony Play Station 3 is a player device so it is not possible to push media content to it. PS3 can be used to pull content from your mobile. To enable this, please go to Settings, Connectivity, Media server and put Share content ‘on’.
● Nokia Play To is meant for playing media stored on mobile i.e. it is not possible to access other DLNA media servers with it.
● If you have run DEEP FACTORY SETTINGS either with "the code" or from phone's Factory settings it is currently not possible to re-install Nokia Play To.

Nokia quietly unveils the Symbian-running C5 5MP

Recently Nokia quietly added the specs of C5-00 5MP to its multiple websites. The candybar Symbian smartphone is virtually identical to its C5-00 sibling, but for the doubled RAM and boosted camera.
The name of the Nokia C5 5MP says it all. It's an 5MP version of the good old C5 smartphone. It has the same measurements, processor, Symbian S60 OS and features. There are just two differences - more memory (256MB RAM and 512MB ROM) and higher-resolution (5 megapixel) camera sensor.

Perhaps Nokia is mum on this fella because the Finns think there's nothing to talk about here. Well, there might be no reason to call a press conference and heap praise on it, but it wouldn't have hurt anyone.
Anyway you may head this way to full specs or compare it to its older 3MP C5 sibling.
The Nokia C5 5MP should become available some time in the next quarter, but we don't have any information on its pricing just yet.

Symbian 3.2 and 5.0 get a browser and navigation update

Nowadays taking care of its latest smartphones is mandatory for every manufacturer with any kind of long term ambitions. However releasing an update for three-year old smartphones, ranging from entry level phones to former high-enders, and showing their owners that they aren't forgotten should certainly earn Nokia some bonus points.
The Finnish company just announced through their blog that they will be releasing an update for their Symbian 3.2 and 5.0 platforms. There's a whole bunch of handsets running those - check out the lengthy list:

The update will bring the new Nokia browser v7.3 to the aging phones, which should significantly improve their browsing experience. This is the same browser that owners of newer Symbian phones will get when the Anna update is released. The benefits of the new browser include improved performance, support for International Domain Names (IDNs) and also supports non-ASCII letters such as Arabic or Chinese.
The other major feature of the firmware update is the updated Ovi Maps app. The software offering free voice-guided navigation will go to version Ovi Maps 3 SR4 on Symbian 3.2 devices, bringing indoor positioning through WiFi, as well as travel and recommendation services such as those through Lonely Planet. Those with Symbian 5.0 devices will get Ovi Maps 3 SR6, adding public transport lines and check-in services to social networking sites.
The final good bit about this update is the addition of a set of emoticons to the listed devices, which can be used when sending MMS.
Nokia C6-00 and Nokia 5230 are already eligible for the update, while the rest of the smartphones will get it in the next few weeks. So make sure you have the software update autocheck switched on in your phone.

Nokia Conversations have posted up that they’ll be releasing updates to several Symbian 3.2 and 5.0 handsets. These are the Symbian phones before Symbian^3 (of which remember, Anna update for August for current customers)

What will we be getting?
Anna Browser
Well, first and foremost, amazingly, we’re getting the new Symbian Anna web browser. I’m not sure exactly how on earth S60 5th will cope with it, but that would be awesome to see it. It’s worth the update (though not meeting the promise of being as good as competitors – namely their own MicroB browser on the N900) But lets keep on the positive – new browser for S60. You haven’t been totally forgotten.


New Maps
There will also be new Maps. There will be different versions for Ovi Maps 3.0 bringing indoor positioning through WiFi as well as travel recommendations (SR4). s60 5th edition will get Ovi Maps SR6 that adds public transport lines as well as check-in services to social networks like FourSquare and facebook.


Nok Conv also mentions new sets of emoticons.


When?
Apparently the wait won’t be too long. It begins today actually with the Nokia C6-00 (the slide QWERTY one) and 5230 (the cheap 5800). Rest of devices in the following weeks.

And one more thing: it’s worth noting that the updates won’t hit all the phones at the same time but will be rolled out in stages, as normally happens. So make sure you have the software update autocheck switched on in your phone!
